Entropion
Treatment for the Eyelid That Turns Inward
What is Entropion?
Entropion is a condition in which the eyelid turns inward, causing the eyelashes to constantly rub against the cornea. This can be very uncomfortable, leading to pain, excessive tearing, and in severe cases, infections or corneal ulcers that may result in partial vision loss. The main goal of treatment is to address these issues as early as possible while minimizing the risk of recurrence.
Entropion treatment
The treatment of entropion generally involves a combination of surgical procedures. These usually include horizontal shortening of the eyelid and outward rotation (everting) of the eyelid margin. This intervention not only relieves immediate symptoms but also prevents future complications. Although common postoperative discomforts such as swelling or mild pain may occur, relief from the irritation caused by the eyelashes rubbing the cornea is often noticed immediately after surgery.
Type of anaesthesia used
Entropion correction can be performed under local Anaesthesia alone or combined with sedation. In most cases, local Anaesthesia is sufficient, as the procedure is not painful.
What to expect after surgery
After surgery, you may notice that the eyelid feels tighter, is slightly swollen, and there may be bruising around the eyelid. Stitches will be placed under the lash line and near crow’s feet, which are typically removed within 7–9 days. Cold compresses should be applied to the area, and an ophthalmic ointment should be applied over the incision and inside the eye as prescribed.
Recovery and postoperative care
While detailed pre- and postoperative care information can be found in the Blepharoplasty section, it’s important to note that recovery from entropion surgery is generally quick and the results are long-lasting. Most patients can resume daily activities within a few days, always following the team’s recommendations to ensure optimal healing.
Preparation before surgery
For the best results, it is important to rest well and maintain a balanced diet.
If you smoke, it is recommended to stop several weeks before surgery, as smoking can impair healing.
If you take anticoagulant medications, consult your prescribing doctor about temporarily suspending them prior to surgery.
Hidden incision technique to avoid visible scars

Dr. Rob van der Veen, an expert in eyelid surgery, also offers an alternative approach to entropion correction: surgery through a hidden incision inside the lower eyelid. This allows the procedure to be performed without a visible incision beneath the lashes, eliminating external scarring.
This technique is an elegant and effective solution for entropion, providing both excellent functional and aesthetic results.
