Dark circles andunder-eye bags
Advanced Aesthetic Solutions
What are Dark Circles and why do they appear?
Dark circles and under-eye bags are very common aesthetic concerns that can give a tired, aged appearance and affect personal confidence.
- Dark Circles: Appear as hollows or dark pigmentation under the eyes. Causes may include genetics, visibility of the orbicular muscle, facial volume loss, or shadows caused by eyelid bags.
- Under-Eye Bags: Appear as bulges due to protrusion of orbital fat, usually caused by weakening of the orbital septum. This process may occur naturally with age or be hereditary.
Correctly identifying the cause is key to choosing the appropriate treatment and achieving a natural, harmonious result.
Main causes
Weakening of the orbital septum: Allows fat to protrude forward, forming bags.
Excess skin and wrinkles: Can accompany bags in older patients, sometimes requiring combined skin removal and fat remodeling techniques.
Genetics: Some people develop bags or dark circles at a younger age, unrelated to aging.
Types of procedures
Lower Blepharoplasty:
- Reshapes or removes excess fat to smooth bags and contours.
- Can be performed via internal incision (conjunctival) for a minimally invasive approach with no visible scars, or external incision under the lashes if skin removal is absolutely necessary.
- Can be combined with cantoplasty/ canthopexy to optimize eyelid shape and CO2-LASER resurfacing for better skin quality and texture.
Alternative Techniques:
- Dermal fillers to smoothen out a hollow sulcus.
- Laser treatments to address pigmentation and slight skin laxity when skin and fat excision are not necessary.

What can I do before surgery to optimize the result?
Discontinuation of anticoagulants: If you are taking blood-thinning medications, it is crucial to stop them several days before the procedure, always under medical supervision. The required washout period varies depending on the medication, so it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions.
Adequate rest: Avoid physical activity and sleep with your head slightly elevated during the first week, as this helps reduce postoperative swelling and the risk of significant bruising.
Healthy diet: Aim for a varied, balanced diet free of ultra-processed products. If you wish, we can arrange a video consultation with our nutrition specialist.
Quit smoking: It is recommended to stop smoking at least a few weeks before surgery. Smoking interferes with healing and increases the risk of complications.
Postoperative care
After upper blepharoplasty surgery, it is essential to follow certain guidelines to ensure a smooth and complication-free recovery:
Rest and limited activity: Avoid intense physical activity, lifting heavy objects, or performing household chores for at least 5–7 days. Physical exertion increases blood pressure and may cause bleeding or bruising that can negatively affect results.
Cold compresses: During the first 72 hours, applying cold compresses to the eyelids helps reduce swelling and bruising. It is recommended to do this for several minutes every hour.
Antibiotic ointment: Your surgeon will prescribe an antibiotic ointment that should be applied twice daily to the surgical wounds for the first 7 to 10 days.
Recovery
- Mild swelling and bruising are normal and typically resolve within a 5-10 days.
- Most patients resume daily activities within 7–14 days.
- Results are long-lasting and provide a fresher, well-rested, and rejuvenated appearance.
